Although many visitors stay at the park for just a few hours, the purpose of this book is to encourage you to stay longer and explore the park as well as the surrounding Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. You can camp at one of the four campgrounds in the park, camp on the adjacent Bureau of Land Management lands or the national forest, or stay at a motel or hotel in nearby Baker or Ely. If you are new to the area you should certainly take the tour of Lehman Caves and a drive up the Wheeler Peak Scenic Road. But these barely scratch the surface of this diverse area. I ordered the paperback version of this guide. The photos in this version are in black and white and they are a bit grainy. The photo of Lexington Arch, used on page 31, and repeated on page 121 but cropped differently, looks most like a black shadow in B&W. Since other reviewers commented on the beautiful photos, I assume that is the Kindle Fire edition they were using and would recommend the cheaper Kindle version if the photos are in color.The guide gives a lot of useful background on services in the area which is important given the remoteness of the park. The history of the area and the park in particular were good but could have been enlivened by some anecdotes and more depth. The strongest part of the guide is the trail descriptions which cover many of the routes. Excellent trail coverage includes access to water, estimated time, and difficulty as well as key location points. The maps are useful but given the elevation changes, topographical maps would be better. Overall, I think the guide is very useful but color photos in the paperback edition would be a big improvement. Fails to mention dogs are not allowed on any trail but Lexington Arche which you need high clearance 4 wheel drive to get to. Other than that it’s an awesome basic overview of hikes with a bit of history. If you just need maps of the park you may wanna check the NPS website.
