For years I have heard about San Miguel de Allende and wondered what it would be like to live there. Now I am planning to spend a year in that city, never actually been there myself. To prepare,I have read five books, guide books and interviews with ex-pats. While each one has been helpful, no book has primed the pump of my excitement as much as A Lifetime to Get Here. The author, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, throws opens the blinds on her rich and rewarding immersion into the city. She describes both the challenges of orienting herself to a new and foreign city, of learning Spanish, of adapting to apartments without central heating and noise from parades, music and firecrackers that mark each of the endless festivals in town. She makes clear the overwhelming rewards of life in SMA for a single woman, an American ex-pat senior who is willing to deeply immerse herself in the cultural, educational, and social activities of SMA. With enthusiasm but without over-selling, she shares the deep history and beauty of the sites she visits along the way.
